Glamorous portrayals of important events, often saturated with bias and subjectivity, creates a news source riddled with agenda and ulterior motive. Over the course of the school year, students will be required to participate in the development of a class blog on current event issues. For each issue, students will be asked to demonstrate several important critical reading skills when analyzing and evaluating the validity and focus of the current event issue. The purpose of this assignment is to utilize current events to further the development of your critical reading skills. These critical reading skills are necessary for an individual to function effectively within our world.
Task
Locate an online current events article or blog touching on a major issue or problem from either an electronic resource (hit Net Top 20 site), or blog from technoratic.com
Utilizing the acronym ACTT and the information regarding propaganda, from the analyzing point of view web-page, read the articles and, or blogs collected, and complete a comment on our classroom blog.
You may use articles from any electronic source appropriate for class.
You should include in your comment, your individual opinion as to the validity of such an article. Attempts to juxtapose the article is always beneficial to understanding the scope of the issue.
Please note: As the year goes on, our class is looking for as many creative methods to enhance the comments. This may include comments from members of the media, other teachers, parents, or students from outside Iroquois. Search out blogs that deal with your topic and try to establish some form of contact with an individual that may have expertise or a different point of view.
